Pumping stations
Pumping stations, also known as pump shafts, are used to dispose of waste water (grey water) or sewage containing faeces (black water) into the sewer system using the backwater level. This prevents backwater even when the sewer is overfilled. Pumping stations are used when drainage cannot be carried out directly into the sewer system using gravity pipes. This type of sewage disposal is also known as pressurised drainage. Pumping stations are used for domestic sewage from detached houses and apartment blocks, in industry and in the municipal sector.
Types and use of pumping stations
Pumping stations can be used to pump municipal, industrial and domestic waste water and sewage. They are used in particular when sewage cannot be discharged into the sewage system by gravity. This is the case, for example, when the sewer pipe is below the sewerage level. Depending on the requirements, different submersible sewage or waste water pumps can be used. Submersible sewage pumps are explosion-proof and either have a cutting unit or a sufficiently large, free passage for pumping solids contained in black water. Submersible sewage pumps with or without a cutting unit can also pump waste water without any problems. Submersible waste water pumps, on the other hand, are only suitable for pumping faecal-free sewage. The pumps are controlled by the ZPS pneumatic comfort control system, whereby the level is measured by means of a pitot tube. The switching points can be set to any desired value with great precision. Alternatively, a float switch can be used to switch the pump on and off in stand-alone pumping stations. Pumping stations are available as single or double systems with one or two pumps in the sump. The second pump is used for operational safety. Only at peak load do both pumps run simultaneously. The pumps switch alternately to ensure even utilisation and to prevent downtime damage.
Get state-of-the-art pumping stations from Zehnder Pumpen
Zehnder Pumpen provides you with everything from a single source. Our pumping stations are supplied as ready-to-use pumping stations or prefabricated plastic sumps complete with pump, coupling system, control unit and pipework. A suitable manhole cover must be used depending on the load (walkable, passable by car, passable by lorry). Plastic manholes made of PE (polyethylene) are characterised by their low weight, which makes them easy to transport and install, as well as their absolute tightness and durability. Manholes are available in various heights from 1.2 m to 3.1 m to suit the required installation depth on site. Do you have any questions about our pumping stations?
