Grey water lifting units

Grey water lifting units are used to drain grey water from showers, washbasins, washing machines or dishwashers. They are used in basement bathrooms, for example, if these are below the level of the sewerage system. Grey water lifting units must not be used to pump waste water containing faeces (black water) from toilets. Special sewage lifting units are used for this case.

How waste water lifting units work

Lifting units usually have a collection tank with an integrated delivery system, i.e. a pump. In some cases, lifting units are also available with two pumps for increased operational reliability, with the second pump switching on at peak load. In addition, the unit remains functional even if one pump fails. Waste water is fed into the lifting unit through an inlet pipe. When the water rises to a certain level, the pump of the waste water lifting unit switches on automatically. As a result, the water is pumped into the sewage system through the pressure pipe. The pump is switched off when the residual water level has reached the switch-off level. In the event of flooding or heavy rainfall, water can be pushed back into the building from the sewage system within a very short time. The top priority when removing waste water and sewage is to avoid this backflow.

Types of waste water lifting units

There are different waste water lifting units depending on where the units are to be installed, the storage volume and the pumping capacity, i.e. the flow rate and delivery head, required. Waste water lifting units are available as free-standing units for above-ground installation or as so-called underfloor boxes for below-ground installation in the floor slab of the building. The devices may be fitted with plastic submersible pumps or stainless steel submersible pumps. A special type of waste water lifting unit is also required for use behind grease separators. Larger waste water lifting units are also available as double units with two pumps for particularly high operational reliability. The lifting units are controlled by float switches or with the help of pneumatic level control.
